So this race was mentally and physically challenging for me. This whole week I have felt pretty off and today was no exception. I was really going to try to stay with MichelleL and then Ruth (who both rocked it! whoohoo you two!) but knew from the start that I would fall over dead if I tried to keep their pace. I did a 2 mile warmup with Michelle and Josse before the race and my hamstring was not  warming up. Probably til about mile 10 it felt like my left leg wanted to move but my right would not get moving. That through me off a little but I just did not feel good today. I have not had a race like that for a long time where I just did not feel good, very fatigued from the gun. I felt really bad after like I let the FRB team down. Everyone seemed to come in under their predicted times and I went over by 6 min. So that was little frustrating for me. I am pleased that with the way I felt that I was able to make the time that I did cuz for awhile I thought I would be in the high 30's.  The highlight of the run was Dustin and Bill (wildbull) running me in the last 2 miles and making me push my limit. Thanks so much you two-and Bill your lifestory was not as interesting as Dustins:) Then Sasha came on us the last 1/2 mile and got me going with a sprint to the end (I thought I was going to die-usually I have that in me to sprint and get extra adrenanline at the end but not today) .The finish line was great to have all the FRB's there and feel like I was a part of something and feeling the support at the end. I truly am thankful for all you guys!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for helping me feel ok about my performance!  I now glad I had this race to humble me  and to learn from and now I know what I need to do for Moab and Ogden (and all my other races)to get in myself in shape so I can blow away my goals! I am going to work soooo hard to reach them ! Hold me to it!

Well here are my splits for the race, my gps said 13.01 at the end

1 6:10,

2.6:50

3.6:58 (started getting passed by other girls, not used to that at all:(

4. 7:11

5.7:27

6:7:09

7.6:50

8.7:15

9.7:34

10. 6:58

11.7:23

12.7:18

13. 7:06

and the 6:53 pace for a 120.9 ft.

Thanks so much to steve for all he did for this race! He is the greatest. (and josse and michelle you guys are welcome at home anytime, it has been so fun to get to know you both, I feel like I have known you both forever!)

Good job Marcie,

way to dig it out even when it wasn't there. Like you said, it just happens some time and now go out and get ready for the next. Still an impressive race!

From andee on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 18:19:47

GOOD JOB!!!

You are so mentally tough - it's amazing. You have a great attitude and I know you will meet all of your future goals.

From Mike Warren on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 18:24:02

Hey, nice effort out there today! I think it shows alot when you run as hard as you did and your just not feeling it. I am excited to get ready for Ogden and you can bet, we will definitely be pushing each other!!

From Dustin on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 18:25:14

Good Job today. It was fun for Bill and I to run with you at the end. It can be challenging especially toward the end of a long race, way to hang in there! I think you're going to have a great year with all your races

From Shauna on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 18:32:15

Great job! It takes a lot of mental strength as well to push through when you're not feeling your best (something I wish I would have had more of last weekend). I think you have a great year ahead of you!

From Jody on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 19:01:59

Good Job!!!! Races like that are so hard but you did fantastic!! No doubt you will have a great racing year!

From Brent on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 19:35:25

Marcie, it seems from your description, you could have packed it in, you did not, you won the mental game, very important for the rest of the year. 25 commando points for mental toughness.

Hey, your time is amazing to me! Way to keep it going and still get a great time when you aren't feeling it. You didn't let anyone down and it sounds like today's race is only leaving you hungry for more! Glad I got to meet you finally too!

From Christi on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 20:57:38

Good job putting in the effort even when feeling "off". You know you are a hero to me! I think your time rocks! It was fun chatting with you this weekend- looking forward to the next one!

From Logan on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 21:19:35

You can't have great races everyday. I need to tell you about my Ogden Marathon race last year. You will bounce back and continue to get stronger. Stay positive and keep up the great work. Wish I could have seen Garrett today!

From Bethany on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 21:23:22

Cody and I were talking and thought that you were very smart to keep up your miles and maybe sacrifice a bit of this race for bigger ones to come. I use the term sacrifice loosely, because you rocked, how many women have those kind of times to their credit! Great job.

From crumpyb1 on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 22:40:45

Congratulations on conquering a tough race! I know what you mean about having only one leg working. I have a kink in my right hamstring/hip that often accompanies me on my runs. I hope your hamstring gets better. I love your attitude and how this race will still help to get you where you want to go. Happy Training!

From Kim on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 23:00:53

Hey Marci, I'm not a speedster like you, but I didn't quite meet my predicted time from Sasha science either. I think 10th place over all is something to be very proud of! I hope you aren't too bummed out, we as fellow FRBs are very proud of you!

From Tom on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 23:02:12

Nice job hanging in there and finishing the tough race! I'm sure you'll have some blowout races in the near future.

From Michelle on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 23:03:10

I think that under the circumstances that you did awesome! I only wish that I had that kinda time in me, this is only early in the year and you will continue to have great races and amazing times coming up!!

Sounds like the party and hang'in with FBR gang was a lot of fun too!

From MichelleL on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 02:24:44

Your splits look great as far as consistency goes the great thing is you never gave up and gave what you could for the day, but I know you can run Sasha's prediction, the key is to learn from it and keep up the base building and you will have many great races this season. Onward to Moab!

From Steve Hooper on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 11:03:30

Way to push it until the end Marcie! I think it's a good start to the new year. Keep it up and you'll continue to reach your goals.

From Lybi on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 11:20:50

I have to echo Kim's comments--WE are all really proud of you--great job! What a tough lady to run like that on an off day.

From Ruthie on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 14:48:59

Marcie, you did a great job for having such a crappy day. I'm amazed at how well you kept it together and made it a good time even with feeling awful! You're such a great runner! And we need to get together to go running again!

From Jamie on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 15:43:06

Good job Marcie! You hung in there when it was hard and still pulled off a great time. You, and the other FRBers that raced, make us proud!

From Bonnie on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 15:53:33

Good job hanging tough Marcie - runs like this is why the team is proud of you - you saw it to the end, even though you knew it was going to be painful at the beginning. You are a fierce competitor!

From josse on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 17:48:18

I didn't meet the Sasha science either, don't sweat it. I think we need a little piece of humble pie to make us better. You are an amazing person keep it up and I look forward to seeing you at Moab and Ogden:)

From James on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 20:41:14

It was nice to meet you. We all have the bad ones once in a while. I still think you ran great. I was super stoked how all of my female teammates did. You have a great year looking you in the face so do be too bummed about it.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 18:21:25

Bad races happen once in a while. Some days your body just will not respond. The laws of nature are merciless. It is, however, important to understand the cause. I took a look at your training and found nothing particularly out of line except maybe one thing. Pushing too hard on the easy runs.

To be safe, I would recommend the following rule - on any given day you go either 8:00 or slower, or 6:40 or faster. Nothing in between. You should probably have the 6:40 or faster twice a week, and that would be the time to run with faster runners. Other days should feel more like a hike, and you should run with slower runners. Nothing wrong with running 10:00 pace with a slower friend and having a chat. Keep the volume at 50-60 miles a week.

For a fitness test/confidence builder. Find a reasonably flat stretch of road, measure it thoroughly (wheel, or take several GPS measurements with Garmin 205/305), and run a 5-6 mile tempo on a day when you feel good. A good place would be something like a loop around the block of Steve's house - it is almost flat, not too long (0.55) and not too short. You can monitor the steadiness of the effort by your lap times.

From MichelleL on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 19:08:11

Marcie - I agree with Sasha (pretty much on the whole comment except you can do the long run on a flat stretch of road that isn't a loop). The only thing that makes it hard for assessing your training is sometimes you don't post your pace on your speed workouts, which would be helpful for you when you look back on your training and would be fun for us to read about too. Perhaps with more info on your blog the Sasha's of the blog can give more specific feedback. Anyway, I am still impressed with how tough you were in the race with your consistent splits and all, even when you knew you weren't running how you knew you could if your legs would only cooperate. Remember our home is always open to you too! The SF 1/2 marathon and the Hobble Creek are good ones around us. Also whenever you are up here, give us ladies a holler and we can do some runs together. Too bad we can't all live in the same place!

From MarcieJ on Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 19:11:53

Sasha-

So 2hard days and 4slow days?? The problem I run into is the time it takes to do slower longer runs. Time is something I dont have alot of. So its just been easier to quicker runs to get in the miles I need.

Michelle-I havent posted alot a speed work, because I havent done alot of speed work. I have posted the splits when I have felt like it was worth calling speed or hard runs. When I upped my miles I cut back on harder runs. I think that hurt me a little on sat. because I wasnt doing tempos. I guess I really havent done "true"tempos since before the marathon and they were never at a 6:40 pace. I have alot to learn!
