From marciej on Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 21:30:47

I think it should be okay, I heard there is a 3 mi out and 3 back on west canyon trail which some of it is gravel and if I remember right a slight incline.Very steep downhill to start! I think it will be a fun race, good weather!

Usually mondays are an 8-9 mi run with my group but today the girl I run with only had time to do 4mi which I was happy with since I have the SC half this weekend and dont want to wear my legs out (especially where they were so fatigued last week). splits today were 8:07(uphill), 6:48, 6:55, and 7:50. Felt really good today-no fatigue in legs today:)avg pace 7:23

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 14:30:54

Marcie - welcome to the blog. For the SC half, unless it is a key race for you where you really want to rock, I would recommend just training through it. Being tired in a half before the gun goes off is great for long-term development. This is how I train for marathons - just race halves without a taper. I still race all out, but on tired legs it becomes more of a training run.

I was just noticing your personal info and how your husband will take will drive you to run. Sounds like he is a supportive guy. It is nice to have a spouse that will support you in your running. Now you just need to get him running with you then it won't be such a sacrafice for him.

I also noticed that Logan was one of your favorite blogs, do you know him personally?

From marciej on Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 23:19:36

James,

Yes its so nice that my husband(Garrett) is so for my running. He's learned I'm always in a better mood when I get my run in:) It would be nice if he ran but he is so active playing in softball and flag football leagues all year long. Plus when we have kids I dont want to share the mornings!

My husband and Logan went to high school together, so they were friends but I met Logan in college and hung out a little. Good luck with all your training!

This area isn't any colder than anywhere else in Utah other than St. George. I actually want to get back to Logan sometime. Good luck to you in your training.

Hey Marcie, sorry it's taken me a few days to post on your blog. I think It's awesome that you're signed-up. The blog helps keep all of us motivated.

Keep up the training - I was looking at your LT goals and I don't think you should have any hesitation saying you want to go to the OT. I think if you Girls keep pushing each other you'll be able to start chipping away at your marathon times even more as time goes on. You definitely have the talent.

Your training seems really strong, and great race times. We've got several ladies on the blog who need to chip away at our marathon times so we can OTQ for 2012. Welcome again!

Also thanks for the welcome, yah I think my Long term goal of OT is a little far fetched but oh well, all we can do is try, right?I have been reading your blogs and am so impressed with your training. I wished I lived in SF so I could train with your group! It seems awesome training. We have a cabin in Provo Canyon so when we come up in the summers I would love to meet up with you guys. From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Nov 16, 2007 at 17:38:04

Marcie - thoughts on how to get to OTQ level. I would recommend starting off on a 6 days a week schedule with no less than 8 miles each day. Keep the pace no faster than 8:00. A couple times a week throw in some strides - run about 6 times for 20 seconds somewhere between your mile and 5 K race pace. Those should be brisk, but not all out sprint. Once a week, if feeling good and feisty run 3-5 miles at your half-marathon race pace effort. Do this for three weeks, let's see how you handle it. Very important not to skip days! Learn to run outside when it is cold, and your training partners do not show up, that is the key. Failure to do that year round is perhaps the very reason there were 62 women in St. George than ran 3:11:05 or faster, but there were only 11 that made the Trials. For a woman, if we are talking 2:47 vs 2:37 I'd say the difference could be mostly talent, but when it is 3:10 vs 2:45, I would say while talent may be involved, 90% of it is in the consistency.

From marciej on Fri, Nov 16, 2007 at 18:52:27

Sasha,

Thank you for taking the time to comment and give advice to help me improve.

How come no faster than an 8:00 pace?

Marcie

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Nov 16, 2007 at 22:14:30

For your current level of fitness, you will gain the same aerobic benefits out of 8:00 pace as you would out of 7:20. However, the stress on the body is much less at 8:00 than it is at 7:20. The chances of injuries and of overloading the nervous system are much smaller. Thus you can run more miles, and get more aerobic conditioning.

Well had the SC half marathon today in St. George and while I didn't get a PR I did take first overall for the females.i neverhave taken first so that was pretty exciting, even though it was a pretty small race, I was happy to experience that (and Ive always wanted toknowwhat it felt like to break the tape as cheesy as that is!)

The weather was perfect, was able to wear shorts and tank from the start. It even got a little warm, kinda crazy for Novemeber weather. The course starts at on a very steep downhill and then around mile 1.5 you break off onto a 3 mi out and 3 back on a dirt trail. It was tough for me, Im not a trail runner and it was a gradual incline. I took off to fast at the start (its hard not to on that steep delcline) and  at mile 4 I was thinking "I cant believe I have only ran 4 mi, Im already spent!" But anyways I just kept on trucking along and was so excited to see the finish line. Overall it was a pretty good course, I liked where they had the course finish. I did get to meet Josse face to face so that was very fun, she ran a great race!!

Time was 1:31:15 and splits were:

1. 5:30 (see way to fast for me)

2.5:47 (still too fast)

3. 6:36

4. 7:35

5 7:43

6. 7:09

7. 7:16

8. 6:55

9. 7:20

10. 6:52

11. 7:04

12. 7:07

13. 7:23 and last .10 was 6:26.

Great job on the win. I don't think that it is cheesy to want to break the tape. That's one of the things that I'm hoping to do one of these days.

From Mik'L on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 20:48:28

Marcie- There is a box to check for "race report" when you are entering your miles for the day, just FYI. That way you can put in all your info on the race.

Great job! First place is awesome! We were a little too upset to stick around, so I didn't get to meet you :( Were you by chance wearing a red Boston jacket beforehand? I thought maybe I saw you but wasn't sure it was you? Those first couple miles were smokin! With that time you were probably pretty high up there in the overall men's category too! Congrats!

From marciej on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 20:53:06

Thanks for letting me know about the race report, I will use it next time.

No that was not me in the red jacket, thats my friend Amber Green (who is an incredible runner) My husband dropped me off at the start line so you probably didnt see me at all. I like your new pictures on your site!

From James on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 20:56:14

From Ruthie on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 20:58:52

Way to be! Great time and AWESOME place! Coach always tells me that PR's come second to winning - if you win, no complaining, no matter the time you get - I don't completely agree, but it's a nice sentiment - especially when you do win with a not-so-great time. ;-)

Are you going to be here over Thanksgiving? We could meet up one of the days I don't have school (Thu-Sat).

From marciej on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 22:41:50

Im not sure on thurs, I pretty sure it wont be at 5am, probably around 7ish??? But we havent set a time exactly yet or how far. But I have no plans on fri or sat set in stone. Lets plan on getting together one or both of those days. We can set details as it gets closer. how far would you want to go?

From Lybi on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 22:54:10

From Ruthie on Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 23:19:53

I probably couldn't go on Thursday then, but definitely lets get together Friday and/or Saturday. I'm not exactly sure how far I'll be running since right now I get my workouts from Coach to train for XC, but I'm guessing Saturday will be a long-ish run (between 6-9). I'll definitely know by Monday, though, when I see him at school.

And to everyone else, thanks so much for the congrats, you are all so nice!!

Marcie

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 12:45:35

Congratulations on the win!

Regarding the first two miles - never judge your pace by the watch, always by the feel - can my body hold this for the rest of the race, can my body go faster than this for the rest of the race? The downhill could be steeper than you think, you could have some tailwind, the mile marker could simply be off, or you may be in better shape than you realize. Still take the splits for observation purposes, but not for decision making - never adjust the pace because your split is either too fast or too slow.

From Cal on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 15:01:46

Way to go Marcie!

From marciej on Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 20:12:00

Sasha,

Thank you for the comments. I agree with you on not judging by the watch. I felt like that hurt me in SG cuz I looked at my GPS way too much, afraid of starting out too fast. In this race however, I didnt pay alot of attention to my pace, I could just feel in my legs and body that those miles were a little too fast for me to start. I did just keep thinking about what you said when you told me its good to be tired from the start and what good training it would be. That got me through the race. I knew I had to push through the fatigue, so thank you so much!!

Wow my legs, I mean my whole body is sore today. Even my ribcage hurts. I got up out of bed and kinda stumbled around and wondered if I would be able to run. I went out and we did an easy 9 and it actually felt pretty good to get the legs moving. Any downhill at all I could really feel (alot). I can't believe I am this sore. I have not gotten this sore for a long long time.  I am going to try to keep my miles up this week, and get a few extra in on turkey day so I can feel a little better about having that extra piece of pie!!(and all the other goodies too:)

Well, it depends if you like trail runs... I know a pretty fun one that is half on trails half on roads and another that is a killer trail run with a mile sand hill in the middle. Other than that I only have boring out-and-back on the AZ strip runs for long runs. What are your 9-miler options? We can have tons of options!!!

From marciej on Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 20:03:48

Ruthie,

There is a 9 mi loop we do alot from my house thats good run. Theres one we used to do out from Kayenta (but i dont the exact mileage). Im really open to anything. Im not great on trails but I would be up for it! Let me know.

From Ruthie on Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 23:47:24

I'd say either your 9 mile loop or my half and half trail/road run. You pick. :)

8 mi loop with nat and cheri, nice easy pace but put some umph into it for the last mile (6:08). Legs finally starting to feel semi-back to normal ... temp dipped below 40 today which was not entirely prepared for, could have used an extra top layer. (I know all you northerner's are laughing but Im baby when it comes to the cold, especially since Im a native of sunny SG.)

Going to try to make it to the gym this afternoon  to get some weights in since Im only working a half day today (Yeahhhh), it will be nice to have 4 1/2 day break from scraping teeth:)  Tomorrow we are planning on our 4th annual 17 mi loop for Thanksgiving so anyone thats is in SG,  your more than welcome to join us.

6:08 is smoking! Are you running Painter's? If so I am in trouble! When the time gets closer to that race, we'll have to see who is doing it and if there is a pack who has similar race goals.

17 mile turkey trot?? WOW!! Thanks but I'll pass. Maybe 10-12 depending on how cold it is down here in Vegas. You can cry to me about the cold because I am a baby too. Grew up in St. George and have lived in Vegas for almost 10 year now. I am definately a desert rat at this point. I'd like to see the northerners train with us in the heat of the summer. Have a great Thanksgiving!!

Ran the SC loop with Cheri, down snow canyon parkway, up through the park and then down the marathon course. It was a slow, painful run. I think I was a little dehydrated and neither Cheri or I was feeling that great. Im just glad we got the miles in and got it done. A few times we discussed turning around and cutting it short but we didnt and kept going and finished stronger then when we started. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Went out  for 1 hr 15 min walk after turkey dinner. Dont  know if I should count these towards slow miles. not sure on the distance.

K what can I say, I ran with Ruth today and she is an incredible runner. She took me on on killer trail run which was probably a piece of cake for her but worked me pretty good. Our avg pace was a 7:55 but there was some tough miles on soft sand and some hills. So Im counting 4 miles as fast cuz I dont feel like they were all slow and definetley not easy! I had alot of fun running with her and hope she will let me join her again! Now I off to with the in-laws to do some shopping.

Also did abs and free weights upper body.

Went 3.75 with Nat and didnt feel that great but then went 5.35 with peg. and felt tons better on the second half.  Avg pace was an 8.  Right hamstring still feeling a little tight, been stretching it but know I need to be better about stretching it out throughout the day. I need to get going with some speedwork, (strides and tempos) but have felt a little unmotivated to do so. I think I go through the winter running blues(every year!) when the weather starts to turn colder. I am giving it to the end of the week to take it easy on my runs and then I have to get back into the groove of things. Yah they did do a good job on the pictures. Pictures when your running can turn out so funny looking, gravity seems to take control. Yours is cute too! Good luck on your recovery and I am glad you are able to do some form of activity.

So this morning I was not feeling well (my husband , a few co-workers, and tons of my patients have been sick) when I got up to go running so I made sure there would be at least two people from group there to run and then I hopped right back in bed and did not feel bad about it at all!

But dont worry I did get my run in after work. I ran up to the SG Running Center from my house (1.43 mi) and then met up with the runners there, we went on the SC parkway trail. I was with some of the guys for the first mile or so and then they took off  so I was on my own from there ( I tried to keep them in view on the way out). I felt great , usually when I run at night I struggle a little cuz my body is not use to it and Im tired from work. But this run I really felt fantastic except for my hamstring was really tight.I felt like it kinda held me back from what i felt capable of tonight. I had to stop and stretch it a few times. I turned around when I got 5.15 out so it would give me a little over 10 to go back to my house. On my way down Valley View my husband came up along side me and gave me ride home (he was worried about me running in the dark) so my run got cut short a little, but good enough for me.

From MichelleL on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 18:42:38

Hey Marcie, Was this run supposed to be a hard day or an easy day? It seems like you are always running hard. If so, that would put extra strain on your body. I am not sure, but I would think that your easy days would be about 1 minute slower than your marathon goal pace. Just my two cents.

From marciej on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 23:35:17

Michelle,

It was supposed to be a harder day. I had very easy runs Mon-wed and last week the only day I had where I put a little extra into was when I went with Ruth. I have tried to take it pretty easy since the SC half, it beat me up pretty good. Thank you for your "two cents" I value your advice and everyone elses:)

Well today will be no miles day for me. My hamstring as I mentioned before has been bothering me and this morning when I got up I could really feel it so I made the conscious decision to rest it today. Its hard for me mentally to take a day off but I know I need too. (I had trouble with my hamstring after the Spectrum 10k in March  which is almost an identical course to the SC half except shorter )

Anyways on a different note and maybe I will post this on the discussion board but do any of you out there suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome too? I have since I was in high school, its never been very bad but the past 3 or 4 years it has gotten worse.Wakes me up at night, or hard to fall asleep cuz they are so flinchie (is that a word??) and achy. They get bad when I fly or travel or watching a movie late at night. It seems to be worse when I have done a long run or a run where I put more into it. I dont want to use the medication they have out  to help with it. Any recommendations???

From Shauna on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 15:01:46

My legs feel restless sometimes too. I notice that it happens when I eat badly, usually too much sugar. It has also happened when I've been really stressed out with work, and on airplanes. So, it might be a matter of reducing stress and/or tweaking the diet. Good luck!

From josse on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 18:22:03

My legs get this way sometimes and it is worse when I am training hard and after long runs. I have noticed that diet affects it like what Shauna said. My brother in law has it really bad and massage is what helps him the most. Hope that helps. For me high doses of Calcium helps to releave the bone shattering achyness.

From ryan on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 23:08:09

sorry about the hammie. i am amazed at the dedication of many of the bloggers. this time of year i rarely run back back days and if i have an ache or pain i will sometimes skip two days. hopefully a day or two of rest will do you good. after all you can't be tearing your body down everyday. good luck. by the way my sisters name is Marci Jacobsen from blanding. i think she mistakenly got one of your awards for the sg marathon a few years ago. do you remember that?

From marciej on Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 23:24:38

Shauna and Josse,

Thank you for the advice, I had not thought about diet but I will pay attention to it and see if there is a connection there.

Ryan

Yah rest is always good. Yes I remember, I met your parents at the spectrum 10k last year and they got my address and sent it to me, thats crazy. This year my uncle works for SG city and was at the finish line where the results would come through and they thought my chip hadnt registered but it was because they had clicked on her and not me. Im sure we will have more of that to come:)

From Bethany on Sun, Dec 02, 2007 at 19:52:49

I think I have the same RLS thing and agree- I dont want to have to take any pills. There are several things that seem to affect mine- either exercising too much or too little, not staying hydrated, positions I sit in during the day (I feel most comfortable sitting on my legs if that makes sense..) and the temperature seems to bug them too- too cold or hot and I am so uncomfortable- I cant describe how it feels- achy kinda. It also got unbearable when I was pregnant :) so I am thinking hormone levels effect it too. Anyway, I have tried warm baths- which help if I do it right before bed. Calcium is supposed to help the muscle twitching- so multivitamins are a good idea. I will walk around my house a couple times, use an electric massager or a heating pad and if it gets unbearable, I will take an Ibuprofen- seems to help. I hadnt thought if paying attention to my diet before. That is a good suggestion too.

So I feel like I am kinda in slump, we usually go 8-10 on wed. Both of us were feeling sluggish  so we took the shorter route. I know we should have just sucked it up and  went the whole thing but sometimes you should need to cut it short and hop back into bed . The past 2 weeks I have just not had the greatest runs and I have to give myself major pep talks each morning to get out to run.Not that I dont want to run but I just want to stay in my warm bed and sleep! It seems like every once in awhile I go through this and then I am back to normal after it runs its course. I will try to back out today  after work to at least get 8 in but will see...

After our run I had about 50 minutes til I had to start getting ready for work so I put back on my pj's and cozy robe and hopped back into bed but forgot to turn my alarm on, needless to say I woke up late and had seriousley rush to make it in time and you can tell by looks of me today:)

So I made it back out tonight to finish my miles, it would have made it alot easier and more time efficient if I would have done it this morning. I had a great run tonight, felt fantastic with just a little tightness in my hammy which warmed up quick. Warmed up the first mile taking it easy and then my splits were 7:00, 6:55, 7:05, 7:31 with an avg of 7:21.  I ran a 1.8 mile loop around my neighborhood and then headed out a little ways and did little over 3 miles. Now I can really put on my PJ's and go to bed! (missed my usual weights on wed nights because of my laziness this morning)

Ditto- glad to know I'm not the only one who struggles getting out of bed. Its Dec. for heaven sakes. This has to be the hardest month of the year! I think you're doing awesome, give yourself a pat on the back!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 14:16:51

Ok, here is the pep talk you were looking forward to. Your day must not end until you've run 8 miles. 8 miles of running on any day Monday - Saturday is a given. What varies is the pace. If you feel good, run a bit faster. If you do not, run slower. If you indeed are so off that you cannot or it would not be good for your health to run 8 miles at 9:30 pace, I suggest you are too sick to do anything else that day and should stay in bed all day long. If you feel good enough to go to work, you are healthy enough to run 8 miles at 9:30 pace!

When you increase mileage you should expect some sluggishness on some days, and even some weeks. This is normal. Some days I start my runs at slower than 9:00 pace, and do not feel like going any faster. It takes me as long as 4 miles before I feel inclined to run 7:15 pace. Then everything is fine towards the end of the run - jogging pace feels easy, race pace feels very doable. Do not let that sluggishness mislead you. Review the Top Ten Training Mistakes article at the link above.

From Jody on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 15:13:30

Im glad Im not the only one that is struggling right now! I feel like Im Little Miss Negative. My husband decided that me and him would like to be Bears in our next life so we can hibernate in the winters:)

Sasha-thank you for the "pep talk"! It was well needed. You always put things in perspective and I will get "ALL" my miles done. Thank you for commenting!

Mik'L- Yes Texas Roadhouse is the best! We go there frequently-I love their LOADED sweet pototos mmm..mmm

Jody and Andee, I wish you could have seen your dad, it was hilarious! We were all afraid to tell the waiter so we didnt but then your dad was opening a card and the waiter so him and asked if it was his b-day, we all said nooo! But then the waiter came back with his crew to get him saddled up. It was a moment to remember!

Marcie, I know the feeling. Upon arriving to meet my running pals this morning at 5am and not finding them, I had contemplated going home and crawling into bed. They found me and I am so glad that I got my 8 miles in...sore-throat and all. Get out there and get your 8 miles! You only need another 2.75 and when you look at it that way, it's not so bad. (Having Sasha in the back of my mind keeps me much more committed and motivated.) Keep truckin'. Oh, and will you please send some of your warm(er) weather up my way PLEASE!

From Jamie on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 22:00:30

Thanks so much! I did get back out and ended up doing 5.27 miles more and so happy I did. Oh the blog has helped me so much! The spring and summer I have no issues getting up, its always this time of year (burn out from summer racing and cold weather...I know its not that cold here) But again thank you for commenting and I will for sure be hearing Sasha in my head too!!!

So I slept in a little today, see on tues and thurs I usually meet a couple girls at 5am ad then a another gal at 6am. I was up alot later than I usually am last night so I just met up with 6am friend. But dont worry I will get the rest of miles in tonight when I go with the Running Club and plan on getting around 8 miles in. (hopefully the rain will hold off til we are done). Not cold at all this morning!

avg. pace 7:58

PM went with the Running Club after work, small group today mostly cross country  runners. Decided to stay on the trail system and do an out and back since its getting dark early. So we headed out and I thought we were going to turn  and go down the SC parkway but instead we kept going straight and headed UP the trail that parallels the marathon course. Holy moly I am use to running down it but not UP it. The group took off pretty fast for myself, so I hung back with some others til I got my groove going. Felt pretty good and got in some killer hills. Went out 2.65 and then turned around and headed back. Even though my pace going up was around 8:20  on the outI am putting them in the fast category because I was pushin it on those hills. coming down  my splits were7:11, 7:12, and the last .6 was at a 6:50 pace.  Avg pace was 7:45 Perfect weather tonight! Sorry Ruth that I didnt get to run with you, I wasnt to far behind you guys and then I turned earlier than you guys did. See you on Saturday !!

Oh you are amazing! 4:30 should be against the law in my book! I have worked nights as a nurse for 15 years to avoid that wake up call. I can handle it if I stay up passed then but if I were to do days I would have to wake up at that hour, OUCHHH! You are now my hero, borderline crazy person! But you are an awesome runner so maybe there is wisdom in the ol' early bird gets the worm thing!

So I am trying not to make too many excuses about not running today but I missed my only window of opportunity to get my run in. It was raining pretty hard  when we were supposed to head out. I dont like starting out in a downpour but if I am running and it starts raining I can deal with that. I didnt have the motivation to drive to the gym to run 8 miles on the treadmill. After work I had a ton of errands to run and no I could not run them on foot and then other obligations to attend to. So I will just have to make tomorrows run count!

Sounds like a busy day for you. We just got home from a friend's house and the snow is really coming down. Hopefully, the rain will take a break long enough for you to get your run in tomorrow. Matt says your sink didn't fit, so are you getting a different one or just keeping the old? Have a wonderful weekend.

From Ruthie on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 23:35:19

As long as making tomorrow's run count doesn't involve killing me with a string of 6:00 miles or something... :)

From sarah on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 23:40:58

I almost missed mine too..I went out and barely got wet. Sasha went when I got home and came back (as he says in Russian) as a wet chicken..kind of cute queer saying.

From marciej on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 00:08:40

Andee,

Yes it didnt fit. It was going to end up costing a ton, they would have to special order or cut the countertops both requiring us to be without a sink for awhile and paying for labor all over again. So we had them just put the old sink back in. 400 dollars later and we still have the same sink!!! We took the sink back (it was our christmas from my parents and so were not in the hole) and now I am scared to tell my mom and dad that they gave us new caulking around our sink for christmas...lovely huh??

Ruth,

haha your funny...i should be worried about you killing me..i thought i was going to die or thurs trying to chase you guys down!!

Sarah,

I am glad you are braver then me!I dont mind the rain in the summer but wet and cold is just plain misery to me. I told myself even if its POURING down here in the morning again..I will go!

Ran 10 miles of the painters1/2 marathon course with Ruth. Wanted a refresher on it, I used to run that course almost every saturday back a few years ago but didnt realize it was the 1/2 marathon course. I felt good the whole time and my hamstring didnt bother me at all (yeah!!) We saw lots of other runners out and few that I know and hadnt talk to or ran with for awhile so that was fun to stop and chat for a minute or two. Weather was nice today, not to cold, overdressed but I would rather shed then be freezin' the whole time. Thanks for running with me Ruth!

I drove home and wanted to get in a few extra miles so I did 5.5 mi around my neighborhood, again felt good. Last two miles my stomach started to cramp a little which is never any fun, just wanted to hurry to get back home.

Free weights, pushups, dips, squats, lunges and ab workout at home.

Great run for you today. I'm glad your leg is feeling better. You are truly dedicated to go home and run 5 more miles and then do toning - you are amazing! Hope you have a fun and relaxing weekend. How's scouts??

From Marciej on Sat, Dec 08, 2007 at 22:31:52

Michelle,

I am not the best describer or detailer of things but I will try my best. You start out at the Dixie Center and head out onto the road ( i didnt pay attention to where the mile markers would be, you may want to ask Ruth that) for a couple of miles and then hit a paved bike path which you stay on for a few more miles (which the whole course is relatively flat most of the way with a little uphill here and there). You pop out on the road and there Ruth said there is a very slight out and back and then you hit the trail system again for awhile and then there is a 3 mile loop on the road and then back on the trail you just came off and that leads back to the Dixie Center. I hope that is not too confusing. Mostly a mixture of road and paves trails and mostly flat.

Jody

Thank you and Garrett says Hi back:)

Ruth

That was a great run today! Are you kidding, you are in awesome shape. Lets run again !

Andee

I had to make up for not getting out yesterday. Im cleansing so relaxing yes, fun no! I just got my binder for scouts but havent had to do anything yet. I need to do the online training thing but have been putting that off. Hope you have had a great weekend!

Well todays run did not turn out to be my best ever.   We run alot on the SC Parkway trail, well its under construction for umpteenth time!!! so the the trail is blocked off at every intersection (driveway into subdivisions). We can usually go around but because it rained over the weekend it was really muddy so we went onto the sidewalk on the other side of the street,Which wasnt any better because its pretty much an obstacle course around signs and cones, so I hopped off the sidewalk into the gutter and then from the gutter to the road .Well there is drop that a i didnt realize was there. Both Cheri I stumbled but icaught it  just right and rolled my ankle! ouch! We stopped for a minute and then walked for a minute and decided to try running, it actually felt ok but when we would have stop at the lights it hurt to walk and by the end of the run it was pretty sore. I hurried into my house and iced for 20 minutes. But its starting to swell. I will ice it as much as I can at work today and IB up but now I have one cankle!

From andee on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:08:54

I'm sorry about your rough run this morning. You'll have to ask Jay about cankles!!! I hope it heals quickly. Are you getting excited about your house? Only a week left - lucky you! How did your cleanse go??

From josse on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 10:32:04

Man I always do that to in fact I rolled my ankel a couple of months ago. I always do that. I always just run through it. Is is a medial or lateral (inside or outside sprain)? Mine is always lateral (outside). I just ice it and work out the swelling with massage. It hurts like a bugger but it works.

From marciej on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:14:15

Andee,

I am so so excited! they will put the shutters in this week. Cleanse went well. Brock and Dusty did it too!

Josse,

Thanks I will take your advice. Its slightly outside lateral but really it feels more on the top of my foot. Hurts to flex or point ( and go side to side). What is hurting is I use a foot pedal all day to operate my instruments at work with my right foot. Im trying to use my left but I am not used to it. But I will ice it and massage. I usually find with myself I am better, like yourself, to run through little injuries. Hope you are doing well and getting back into the swing of things!

From MichelleL on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:17:43

Shoot Marcie! I hope it gets better soon.

From Jody on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:28:45

How did Brock survive the cleanse? How is the pulser?

From andee on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 15:57:03

So did you all convince Garrett to cleanse too? I had forgotten about the pulser - how was it? Matt and I will have to find out more about that over Christmas.

From marciej on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 16:16:51

Jody-

Brock, I think, did pretty good on it. It got real hungry sat. night but it was pretty successful for him (thats what dusty told me). So far so good with the "zapper".

Andee-

I think he will do it, he was thinking this coming weekend but that wont work with our schedule but hopefully the next. We'll see though, I dont want to force him!

From Ruthie on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 19:57:16

Did a similar route but avoided the SC parkway today-did an out and back, which I usually dont like but  was suprised I really did today, we got some more ideas from it and some different routes til our trail is back to normal. We had a good pace today, again I dont have a pace or time because I would stop by garmin and then would forget to start it, but it felt great!   Its always nice when you  feel good and can run without thinking about that you are running! (or that it is cold or you want to go back to bed) I didnt have any negative thoughts today and if I didnt have to get back for work i just may have kept going. So I finally get to enter in my blog. I missed my run this morning because my 5am friend cancelled early in the morning (and I dont like to go out in the mornings in the winter when its dark by myself, my brother is a sargent with the SG PD and the past couple years there have been several attacks on female runners in SG, so I promised my husband and brother I would not go alone) so I went back to bed til I met with my 6am friend but I forgot to reset my alarm clock so I totally stood her up, I felt so bad ! But I got off work early today and took off ( I wanted to go with the running club but since I got off at 4 today I didnt want to wait)

I tried a little experiment tonight. I wanted to see what my avg pace is at a relaxed comfortable state and putting no extra effort into the run, never pushing myself  out of that comfort zone.  Avg pace 7:25, time 1:15 min .I was happy with that.

Hey Andee and Jody, we got out shutters put in yesterday, I love them. Andee- Garrett and I were thinking that if you want any of our white wood blinds for your  basement you could have them. They might not fit just right but garrett says you cut them to fit. Let us know.

From MichelleL on Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 20:53:47

That's a fast relaxed pace! I was feeling good about my 7:43 average pace today, and I even had to push it up a hill to make sure that mile didn't end up slow. Good job! If you lived up here I would invite you to join me for the 6 minute pace til you puke experiment. If you get up here at all for the holidays we could get together for that or any other run. We have a guest bedroom, and you are welcome to come up just to visit us, too! Since you are not a student I guess you don't get the time off automatically, though. But the offer always stands :)

From marciej on Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 21:16:33

I think I will have to pass on the 6 min pace til you puke. I really dont think I could hold that. I have done 3 miles on the treadmill at a 6:20 pace but I dont think I could have done that without the treadmill pulling me. I would love to run with you though!!!I dont know what our plans for the winter are (I really hate the cold!) but we go up to Provo canyon in the summers often and up to west valley, west jordan to see family (andee and jody on the blog) so defineltely then. You are so sweet!!

I am jealous of the warmth! Good job making good use of your time and squeezing in some more miles. Do you feel any complaints from your body when you get into the higher mileage?

From Lybi on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 10:10:43

What a cute picture! Wow, I am impressed that you decided to run instead of catching a few more snoozes. So you just ran an amazing half marathon...wow!

From MarcieJ on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 19:20:45

Thanks for all the comments.

Andee and Michelle,

just wait til summer and I will be jealous of you guys getting to run the cooler weather and Michelle I really dont feel anything out of the ordinary. Its been good for me to gradually increase my mileage, even training for the marathon my miles usually arent this high so will see,(I usually have people telling me I am running too much so its so nice to be encouraged to add more miles-I think it really helps to get a good base, dont you?)

Jody-

I will have to mail it to you or send it up with Matt and Andee because its a few pages long and I dont have a scanner and I dont want to type it all up.Is that ok?

From Jody on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 19:32:14

Marcie,

Not a big deal. Do you have access to a fax? If not no worries.

Thanks again!

From MichelleL on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 20:42:50

It is definitely good to get in a good base! No excuses! 10 miles (at least) a day! It's fun to have us in the same place and same goals. Good luck tomorrow!

I know, I know I know that this is not even close to the minimum of 8 miles I am supposed to be doing a day and my excuses are no good. I didnt make it out this morning because I could not sleep last night and didnt end up falling asleep til 3am and 4:30 came really fast. I could not move out of my bed, literally I felt like I had been run over my truck! So how did I get my 2.5 miles, well I attempted to go after work and felt miserable, legs werent working andI got a major side stitch so I ran back home and dont think I will try to go back out again tonight. So I will try to make them up during the rest of the week. I know they are not good excuses but thats just the facts!

if your ever feel bad about not running just go look at my blog. i try to run as little as i can and make it count especially in the winter. i rarely run in the morning, i like sleep more than running i guess.

From MichelleL on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 22:25:57

At least you got in over 13 yesterday, so you were ahead of where you needed to be, so just get some sleep! I hope there is nothing in particular keeping you up and that you can make up the sleep over the rest of the week, too. 4:30 seems so much earlier in the winter too.

From Jody on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 22:31:58

Look on the bright side - you were 5 miles ahead yesterday. So today you are only a net -.5 behind. You'll get it done!!

From Brent on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 22:59:40

Hard to follow the advice of the top runners? 8 miles a day, tinman runs, CV, tempo, etc. The fast runners on the blog earn every second. No doubt why they are so good. Good luck on your quest.

From Bethany on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 23:34:13

At least you got in the 2.5! Probably barely worth the clothing change for you, but good job making something happen. Better luck tomorrow!

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 13:50:59

Going for a run is a good idea if you cannot fall asleep, and you have to be somewhere in the morning so you cannot sleep in to make up. So you lose no time, just come back and sleep in to make up.

Making up for a missed workout is not a good idea, see the list of training mistakes.

From marciej on Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 14:13:26

Well thats good to know, thank you!

Sasha

I read that top ten mistakes and need to improve on a few of them.

From MichelleL on Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 22:02:11

Some good pepper spray can help you feel comfortable running alone in the dark. I feel like 1am-6am are the safest times to run--that's when even the crazies out there get to sleep. I think more crazy people are awake and on the prowl at 6:30 than at 5am.

From MarcieJ on Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 10:45:23

I do run with pepperspray all the time, no matter what time of day. But I am paranoid about it. It makes my husband really uncomfortable if I am alone out early in the mornings. So if I want him to support my running I will do what makes him comfortable.

Todays run ended up being further than we planned on going because we got lost! We tried a this new route that we did last saturday but with a few adjustments well we must have taken wrong turn out in Santa Clara heights and ended up way out in Ivins going totally the opposite direction of what we had thought. It was so dark and I dont know Ivins at all and we got totally turned around so we added on 3.5 miles which isnt a ton but  when you have a time to be back its alot extra to add. (my friend had to be back at 6:30) so we had to high tail it home, I felt like I was running in a race. So I got some extra miles and some speed work which is good considering my tues run.

But it was so warm this morning, i wore way too much and had to shed alot of clothing!

Ran with Cheri, felt really good the whole time. We stopped at a light and I stopped my garmin and guess never restarted it again (I do that alot!) We did a slightly different route today and really liked it. I had to go back after and clock it with my car to get the mileage.

Since I dont have work today decided to make the most of my time and went to the gym to do some weights, which felt so good to since I have slacked greatly on that lately, then I did 25 min. on the eliptical, it said it was 3.8 mi but I dont if the machine is accurate. Did first 15 at level 8 and last 10 at level 9.

Merry Christmas!

I felt sluggish and sick to my stomach right from start, but I told myself just get this done and then I can go home take a warm shower and snuggle up on the couch! It felt like I was out there for an eternity. My running partners kids were sick all through the night so I was on my own today, it is so much nicer torun with someone, especially when you are not feeling the greatest, it really distracts you from it. Ran a nice easy 10 down the SG marathon course with my friend peg. (my husband was very nice and got up early to drive us up and drop us off) avg was about an 8 pace

Then I ran 2.5 more miles at 7:11 avg pace, with the last mile being up hill. It was really hard for me! Usually that is not hard for me to run that pace and such a short distance. So it was kinda frustrating to me. I am hoping it is just because my week is thorwn off a little by eating absurd, going to bed late and running later in the morning and probably because I have not done any form of legit speed work for a long time! I have got to get on the ball and start throwing in some strides and a tempo run each week!

Comments
From MichelleL on Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 14:40:29

7:11 is respectable, almost a marathon pace tempo, especially if it is net uphill. I find running later in the morning makes running harder for me. I think the holidays can throw us all for a loop, but you are keeping high mileage (way up! you're going to be in the 70's baby!) which is the most important thing.

From Bethany on Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 14:40:59
