Ran with Mike, wanted to do 3 mi warmup 6 mi tempo and 3 cooldown. Since I havent been doing reg tempos I wanted to try to keep a 7 min mile and then each week to try to take that lower. Was a little worried today because my stomach yesterday was a mess and wasnt feeling 100% this morning (and still is not:(. But it actually felt ok for most of the run.

First 3 mi warmup had some good incline7:55, 8:04, 7:53 (during this time we are debating on starting the tempo on the uphill or wait til mile 4.5-5 to flatten out, decide to start . Felt really good for the first mile and then I started to really feel the incline and then my stomach got a little cramped. At 1.5 into the tempo and  about where it starts to flatten I stop for VBP and tell Mike to just go ahead. Then I try to catch up to Mike, see him on the way back and turn around with him (cut off .2 from tempo, but made it up at the end of the run) . Then I just ran a few yards behind Mike til the last mile and then side to side to the end. Today it felt like my mind wanted to work but my legs didnt. I have alot of work to do to get my tempo times down down down but I know it will come with consistent training. My splits are little offs from Mikes from my bathroom break and slightly behind him. For all the running I have been doing lately I feel sorta out of shape, hopefully it will get better! Esp once it warms up and I can wear shorts and just a long sleeve. Spring and summer are always my good months!

1st tempo mile 6:56, then for 3/4 mi 7:26 (stopped my garmin here, bathroom break), 6:47 (trying to catch up to mike), 7:07, 7:05, 7:01.

Next week I want to keep all the tempo miles under 7.

12 miles today! Wow, impressive.

Glad to see you are feeling better.

WOW!! Great job today! Glad you are feeling a little bit better. Hope you get back to 100% soon!!

Good job Marcie. Doing tempos week in and week out will help you to feel more in shape over time. It's hard to do these when you aren't feeling well so that shows alot of strength.

From Lybi on Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 22:19:52

Great job, Marcie! Those splits look good! Higher mileage is probably responsible for legs being tired. I'd guess. Give it a few weeks to adjust and you are gonna be FLYING!

Nice splits! Especially when you aren't feeling the best. You are doing a good job at getting in some good miles!

From Brent on Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 22:52:28

Marcie, what is a tempo anyway? some sort of dance? Agree with Lybi, tough to get the mileage up and have the legs always fire on all cylinders, have experienced much the same over the last 3 months, legs are just now fully adjusting.

It is very important to measure out your tempos with something more precise than a GPS. In fact, manhole to bush type of tempo done week after week from the same manhole to the same bush is much better than measuring your tempos with a GPS. What I can tell from the splits you've posted is that you ran around 6 miles at around 7:00 pace. I could have told you that if you said you ran by your car clock for 42 minutes and it felt hard. But one cannot be sure if it was 6:55 or 7:05, and if 6:55 at the end felt as good as 7:05 in the beginning, or of 7:05 at the end took as much effort as 6:55 in the beginning. Which is important to know, but neither a car clock nor a GPS can reliably tell you.

What I recommend is finding a course with easily identifiable landmarks and wheeling it (ideally). 10 GPS runs marking every mile is acceptable, although less than ideal. But I cannot overemphasize the importance of using landmarks. They do not move with the satellite signal changes, so you can tell if you ran it faster next week or slower. And you can always wheel them after the fact.

Sasha

Where do you get a wheel?

From Mike Warren on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 17:29:43

Marcie, I have a wheel! Although I find dropping bread crumbs and counting them each time you run by, is much more accurate(JK)! Really though, I do have a wheel, you are more than welcome to use it anytime.

From saamijeff on Fri, Feb 01, 2008 at 13:15:57

I marked all my regular routes with a wheel. Be careful though when measuring on grass or sand, even a good wheel tends to under measure up to 2+% on long grass or soft sand. They are highly accurate on smooth hard surfaces like blacktop. I bought one, marked off all my routes then donated the wheel to a school that did not have one.
